There are some important steps to take after you find out you're pregnant in order to help keep you and your baby healthy.
Congratulations, you're pregnant! Wondering what to do now? In honor of National Birth Defects Prevention Month, here are some steps to take.
• Get prenatal care. See your doctor to calculate your due date and get a schedule of prenatal exams and tests. He or she can also address questions about morning sickness, weight gain, side effects of pregnancy and other common pregnancy-related concerns. Proper prenatal care plays an important role in keeping both you and your baby healthy.
• Adopt a "for two" lifestyle. What you eat, what you drink and medication you take will now affect both you and your developing baby. Your doctor will likely advise you to take a prenatal vitamin, counsel you on caffeine and alcohol consumption, provide you a list of foods to avoid and explain how to exercise safely.
• Plan and prepare. Now is the time to start learning about labor signs, pain management options during delivery, breastfeeding, infant care and more. It's also a good time to find a pediatrician, someone who will be a big part of your baby's early years.
